Billionaire tycoon Bill Gates has acknowledged a Filipino as one of the 10 best teachers in the world.
Out of 10 finalists of the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2018, the Iloilo-based teacher Jesus Insilada is running for the $1-million prize.
Insilada works as an English and Creative Writing Teacher at Caninguan National High School in Lambunao.
His intelligence was even highlighted as Insilada won four Palanca awards as a poet and a short story writer.
“Finalists were selected based on a rigorous set of criteria, including their proven effectiveness in inspiring students and helping them learn,” Gates said in a video announcement.
There were more than 30,000 nominations from 173 countries.
Completing the top 10 were: Nurten Akkuş of Turkey, Marjorie Brown of South Africa, Luis Miguel Bermudez Gutierrez of Colombia, Glenn Lee of Hawaii, Diego Mahfouz Faria Lima of Brazil, Koen Timmers of Belgium, Eddie Woo of Australia, Andria Zafirakou of United Kingdom, and Barbara Anna Zielonka of Norway.
Another Filipino, Ryan Homan of San Jose Elementary School in Donsol, made it to the Top 50 shortlist.
