Two Filipino seafarers have returned safely to the country after being stranded in Iran for two weeks, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
The seamen were identified as Jerry Gabanzo and Miguel Estrella, Jr., crew members of the United Arab Emirates-owned MV Blue Nile.
The reason why they were offloaded from the ship on April 11 was still not clear.
Five days later, the Philippine Embassy in Tehran learned about the unfortunate situation.
Philippine Ambassador to Iran Wilfredo Santos said they immediately responded with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tehran, to its regional office in Chabahar, as well as with the immigration offices in both cities to obtain custody over the Filipino seafarers.
The Embassy also contacted the distressed Filipinos’ manning agencies in Manila about what happened as well as to take action against the Dubai-based ship owners, particularly their unpaid salaries and benefits.
Gabanzo and Estrella were both assisted until they landed in Manila on April 26.
