The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) held celebration programs for “Araw ng Kasambahay” in recognition of the works and contributions of the domestic workers on May 18, 2018 at the Bureau of Labor Relations in Intramuros, Manila.

The activities were held to commemorate the signing of the Batas Kasambahay’s Implementing Rules and Regulations on May 9, 2013.

The Batas Kasambahay or Republic Act 10361 was enacted in 2013 to protect the rights and guarantee the privileges of the household helpers. The law recognizes the domestic workers as similar to those in the formal economy.

More than 70 domestic workers, trainees, and members of the Association of Licensed Private Employment Agency of the Philippines (ALPEAP) participated in the activities spearheaded by the Employment Promotion and Workers Welfare Division (EPWW) of DOLE-National Capital Region (NCR).

In his message, DOLE-NCR Regional Director Henry John S. Jalbuena emphasized the significance of having the right perspective towards work that should be coupled with perseverance. Jalbuena cited the importance of adhering to the tenets of the law such as the provision of mandatory benefits and the humane treatment of the domestic workers.

During the event, participants were given information on the following: Batas Kasambahay, benefits of being a Pag-IBIG member, work ethics and values, and skills development.

Values, ethics and skills needed by the domestic workers were also discussed during the forum.
